This week I had a great couple from Chicago that came out to celebrate his 60th birthday with a rural bike trip in Japan. This is probably the next-to-last bike trip for the year, with only a pair of sisters coming to visit for a week on Sunday. Time to start putting the bikes away.

They timed it right for the colors, but they could have done a better job with the weather. Luckily it did not rain as much as the forecast called for, and we did have spots of sun on their last day.

3,7,5 ceremony in iiyama temple

It is also 3-5-7 time in Japan, when children go to the shrine or temple for a blessing for luck. We happened upon a temple in the area just as a little boy was therefor his personal ceremony.

It is also peak nozawana leaf season, and the market was full. Everyone is harvesting and washing them to pickle for the winter. In Nozawa Onsen Village, the local hot-spring laundry bath is reserved now for cleaning vegetables.

Here are a couple shots from the weekend, including making soba at the local shoba shop under the careful direction of our favorite soba-sensei.

    1. Because I did not know about this soba shop/teacher last time you were here. It is about an hour and half away from my place, and I just found out about her this year. I use her every chance I can get. Next time you come I will take you there for sure.
